Annual Speech Contest
Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to ALL concerned? Each year, many Rotary Clubs and Districts conduct an annual speech contest for high school students where they are asked to compete first on their school level with the winner presenting their winning speech to the local Rotary Club and competing with any additional high schools in their area who have entered a contestant. The winner from each club level is then eligible to compete on the district level against winners from the other Rotary Clubs in that district. The purpose of the speech is to solve an ethical problem using the principles of the Four Way Test. The ethical problem to be solved should be something from the speaker's personal experience or general knowledge. Each one of the four parts of the Four Way Test should be addressed during the speech. Winners on the club and District level compete for hundreds of dollars in awards and the top three district winners present their wminning speeches to the entire district membership at the annual Rotary District Conference in the Spring. The Rotary Club of Hillcrest is fortunate to represent seven communities and six separate public and private high schools and each year we generally have at least four entrants from these schools competing in our club's speech contest. Over the years, we are proud to have also had the winning speaker for our Rotary District 6630. Our entrants and winners this year were: 1st Place: Alan Kisner from Richmond Heights High 2nd Place: Alexandra Pilla from Gilmour Academy 3rd Place: Rachel Kaminsky from Mayfield High 4th Place: Derrick Amanor from Brush High Alan will be representing our club at the district competition at Beachwood High School on Saturday, April 12th. |
