Hillcrest Rotagram - March 25, 2008 Meeting

BULLETIN EDITOR:
Georgia Tucholka

Guests: Norma, Julie West, Brian Boswell, Steve Kenyan

Mike Johns Sr. Started the club meeting by leading the song, "Hello" to be sang for the guests and perspective members.

Happy / Sad Bucks: Tom Mugridge was happy that he celebrated his dad's 92nd birthday in Middlefield. The snow made the trip bad as they drove for an hour and a half to travel 15 miles. George Schumacher was happy to receive Vo-Ed sponsor and booster applications. He reminded the club that we need to get these filled out and returned to him ASAP. Joe Wilson gave his birthday money and offered a bribe dollar for someone to takeover as the Sunshine Chairman. He stated that he isn't really good at this type of thing and asked for someone to take the dollar and help him out. Joe Kamiab took the dollar and smiled! Brian Giallombardo was sad about the Pitchers home and the terrible fire that happened. He talked about the future of your home and how to prevent such disasters from happening and mentioned doing a possible presentation on fire prevention. Mike Lewis gave his birthday money for his 34th birthday. John Bosco was happy to be back from Greensboro South Carolina where he visited his son and attended drag queen bingo as a fundraiser. He mentioned that the event drew a lot of money and that we should consider such an event for possible revenue. There were a lot of laughs. Mike Jr. leaves happily for St. Croix and will try to make up while he is there. Ross was happy to be leaving for Southern California for a convention in San Diego. Joe Cicero gave a pat on the back buck for the City of Lyndhurst being there in a time of need for the Chardon Fire Department who lost trucks and resources. Lyndhurst sent vehicles and received some good press.

Announcements:

John Wilson announced that the Med Safe program collected thousands of dollars in medical supplies for pediatric assistance. They need $11,000.00 to ship the supplies. He said this sounds like a Rotary project.

John also commented on George Schumacher's sentiment regarding the Vo-Ed dinner. He said that it was the 30th year for this and we need to get these 36 kids sponsors. Contact George, Joe or Scott for info.

Joe DeLibero announced that May 20th sounded good for the picnic with the special education kids at Lander School. Event will be held on Strawberry lane at noon.

John Bosco passed out pamphlets on "What is Rotary?"

Mike Jr. Announced the Melting Pot dinner would be different from our other TOH dinners in that the menu would be pre-determined. Cost is $35 per person not including tax and tip. Soft drinks and valet parking are included in the cost. Mike also auctioned off his famous "shadone" which is a savory Italian delicacy with Swiss cheese, sausage, and pepperoni. Two of them sold to club members.

Joe Cicero announced the district assembly on April 5th at the Bertram Inn was required for all board members. There is a sign up sheet for car pooling. It is a great experience and all members are encouraged to attend.

Julie West added to Joe's point by saying that it is open to all Rotarians. All aspects of Rotary are broken down and the information is invaluable. Visit the District Website for details. www.rotarydistrict6630.com for workshops and sign ups.

Ross mentioned the Pancake Breakfast at the Brookshire Highschool on Sunday at 10:00 AM. Also there is a softball tournament coming up and there may be interest to create a team.

Ross also mentioned that the newest Governor's newsletter is available online.

HRC Board meeting is April 3rd at the Lyndhurst Municipal at 6:30.

Mike Sr. gave a great presentation about his trip to Nigeria with the primary purpose of kicking off another immunization program. He happened to mention that while trying to immunize the kids in one village, over 60% of the parents were withholding their kids from getting the vaccine. Obviously upset by this, Mike asked to speak to the hard of the town to discuss this lack of participation. The leader, who had had his own children immunized gathered the local leaders and had them go to their district people and convince them to cooperate which they did the following day when Mike and his group returned to a much better welcome.

He was treated with exceptional courtesy and found that wherever he went, the people were always praising God and invoking His blessing. God is abundant in their culture whereas over here we are doing our best to get Him out of it.

Rotabuck Winner: Mike Johns Jr. with ticket picked by his father after his presentation.
