Hillcrest Rotagram - April 8, 2008 Meeting

BULLETIN EDITOR:
Bill Burcham

MEETING GUESTS: We welcomed Wes Baker from the Chagrin Valley Rotary, Dan Davis from the Chagrin Highlands Club, Michelle Hauser from the Willoughby Rotary, her guests, John and Natalie Kupinski, and Steve Weinkroot.

FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING: Our Foundation Board will meet at 7:00 AM on April 22nd at Alfredo's in the Mayfield Holiday Inn.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS: Gail Sinito had a wonderful winter in Florida and found a great Rotary club in Estero. During the winter, they have many guests including some from other countries. They even had a table just for Ohioans. Dan Davis distributed special T-shirts to those who will be helping out at the District Speech Contest at Beachwood High School this Saturday morning. John Bosco learned a lot at the District Assembly last Saturday. He was especially pleased at all the methods of fundraising that were presented. Brian Giallombardo also found the Assembly to be very worthwhile. Mike Johns, Sr. was grateful that President Ross waited to ring the bell until Mike arrived. Georgia Tucholka is happy that Bill Burcham has finally returned from Florida. Bill was thankful that the winter weather he had in Florida was great. George Schumacher reminded members to get their applications in to be sponsors or boosters for this year's Vocational Awards Dinner. He threatened fines otherwise. The deadline is April 10th. Jackie Minotas missed a meeting because she took a great trip with a daughter and friend. She also enjoyed the TOH dinner at the Melting Pot. Michelle Hauser thanked our club for its help with her recent fundraiser. She pointed out that the father of the deceased serviceman was so impressed with Rotary that he joined the Mentor Club. Mike Johns, Jr. thanked all those who came to dinner at the Melting Pot. He also attended the District Assembly and said that Roger Cram's presentation on Rotary committees was the best he had ever heard. Mike and Debi spent a week in St. Croix and discovered they have four Rotary Clubs. He described the island as quiet and beautiful. Bill Hite thanked Joe DeLibero for the wonderful experience of getting a new crown. (He sounded sincere, but he was probably trying to stimulate a discount.) Ross DeJohn was happy that a good crowd made it to the Melting Pot.

DATES TO BE SAVED:

WEBSITE INFORMATION: Be sure to keep Melissa DiBlasi informed as to the dates for events being planned, and don't forget to consult our club's website for up-to-date info on our club.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Jackie Minotas announced that this year's Special Olympics Bowling will take place on Sunday, April 27th, in two sessions: 9:00 and 1:00. Our club sponsors this event, so we need to have a number of club members to assist the bowlers.

On Saturday, May 3rd, the Special Olympics track meet will be held at Wickcliffe High School. We don't actually sponsor this event, but it's fun and help is appreciated.

MEMORIAL DAY: Tom Mugridge is coordinating our participation in the South Euclid parade. See him for details.

HEIGHTS-HILLCREST CHAMBER: Our speaker was Angie Pohlman, Executive Director of Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce. She explained that the Chamber helps people to form relationships, provides resources for businesses, and conducts business education programs. Angie provided two brochures explaining the work of the organization.

She also mentioned a number of Chamber programs coming up, especially emphasizing Business Expo 2008 to be held at Landerhaven on Tuesday, April 29th, from 3-7 PM. One thousand people attended last year. If you wish to have your business represented there, they have 15 slots still open.

ROTABUCK WINNER: Lynda Rossiter.
