Hillcrest Rotagram - April 15, 2008 Meeting

BULLETIN EDITOR:
Bill Burcham

NEXT WEEK: On Tuesday, April 22, we will hear from the Hiram College students who accompanied Roger Cram to Nicaragua last year. They will tell us more about the "children of the dump."

GUESTS: We welcomed Steve Kenyon who will soon be inducted as a club member.

FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING: Our Foundation Board will meet at 7:00 AM on April 22 at Alfredo's in the Mayfield Holiday Inn.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS: John Wilson was pleased that his son was on the front page of Crain's accompanied by a nice article about the company. John also enjoyed a good trip to Minneapolis. Mike Johns, Jr.'s wife, Debi, got a surprise when she found her lost driver's license in her shoe. Apparently, it found its way there while she went through airport security and had been there until she discovered it at home at the end of their trip to St. Croix. Joe DeLibero paid a mixed emotion buck for anticipating what would happen when Borowski faced Manny in the 9th inning of the Indians game. He and his friends left rather than watch, and their worst fears came true. Ross DeJohn paid a fine even though it was his dad's name that was mentioned on T.V. Ross also had a good time at a bachelor party in Las Vegas. Lynda Rossiter was happy to babysit with her two year old grandchild and to talk to her son and her oldest grandchild in Texas. She also is hopeful that her staffing at work will be completed this week.

DISTRICT SPEECH CONTEST: Joe Wilson reported that thirty students participated in the District Four Way Test Speech Contest at Beachwood on Saturday. A number of our club members helped with the event, and although our candidate did not win, he enjoyed being involved and was impressed with Rotary.

THANK YOU: Joe Wilson also announced that he had applied for a grant to the HCR Manor Care Foundation, and as a result, our club was again presented with a check for $500 from the Foundation. Service above self, Joe!

DISTRICT CONFERENCE: President Ross emphasized the need for all of us to consult our website for information about the District Conference which begins on May 16, at the Bertram Inn. Lunch that day will replace our regular meeting of Tuesday of that week. The club will cover the first $10 of the luncheon. Members will need to pay $9 to cover the full cost of $19. Saturday night's dinner at the Conference will cost a total of $49 with the club picking up $20. Treasurer Lynda needs your checks for these meals along with registration forms no later than April 22 if you wish to get the lowest prices. In addition to the meals, the Conference will include many other meetings and opportunities to play golf and/or tennis.

R.I. FOUNDATION: Ross DeJohn announced that thus far our club has only contributed 30% of our goal for this Rotary year. Our Board has pledged to match any contribution up to $100, so if you give Lynda your check made out to R.I. Foundation for $100, you will receive credit toward a Paul Harris Award for $200. If you've already sent in a check to RI this year, give Lynda your receipt so the club can match your contribution.

BOARD MEETING: This month's regular Board meeting will be next Thursday, April 24, at 6:30 PM at the Mayfield Heights Walmart.

TOH DINNER: Mike Johns, Jr. announced that the next TOH thank you dinner will at Bar Louie on Friday, April 25.

MEMBERSHIP: Mike Johns, Sr. pointed out that our Zone 28 is the only zone in North America that declined in membership last year.

Rob Previte attended the District Assembly and came away with many ideas on how to increase membership in our club. He listed these and discussion of them has been promised in the near future.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOWLING: We have a number of members coming to help in the morning, but we need more in the afternoon.

SHIRT SALES: John Wilson will be taking Rotary shirt orders next week. Ask him for the size and styles you would like to have.

ROTABUCK WINNER: ?? (Sorry, I missed it.)
